Classic English Children's Books and Stories in England

[Mama Traveler Recommended!] The Wind In The Willows: For more than a century, The Wind in the Willows and its endearing protagonists--Mole, Mr. Toad, Badger, and Ratty--have enchanted children of all ages. Whether the four friends are setting forth on an exciting adventure, engaging in a comic caper, or simply relaxing by the River Thames, their stories are among the most charming in all English literature.

[Mama Traveler Recommended!] Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone: Harry Potter is an ordinary boy who lives in a cupboard under the stairs at his Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon's house, which he thinks is normal for someone like him who's parents have been killed in a 'car crash'. He is bullied by them and his fat, spoilt cousin Dudley, and lives a very unremarkable life with only the odd hiccup (like his hair growing back overnight!) to cause him much to think about. That is until an owl turns up with a letter addressed to Harry and all hell breaks loose! He is literally rescued by a world where nothing is as it seems and magic lessons are the order of the day. Read and find out how Harry discovers his true heritage at Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft, the reason behind his parents mysterious death, who is out to kill him, and how he uncovers the most amazing secret of all time, the fabled Philosopher's Stone! All this and muggles too. Now, what are they?

[Mama Traveler Recommended!] Peter Pan: Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up or Peter and Wendy, often known simply as Peter Pan, is a work by J. M. Barrie, in the form of a 1904 play and a 1911 novel. Both versions tell the story of Peter Pan, a mischievous little boy who can fly, and has many adventures on the island of Neverland that is inhabited by mermaids, fairies, Native Americans, and pirates. The Peter Pan stories also involve the characters Wendy Darling and her two brothers John and Michael, Peter's fairy Tinker Bell, the Lost Boys, and the pirate Captain Hook.

[Mama Traveler Recommended!] Winnie the Pooh: Winnie-the-Pooh, also called Pooh Bear and Pooh, is a fictional anthropomorphic teddy bear created by English author A. A. Milne and English illustrator E. H. Shepard. The first collection of stories about the character was the book Winnie-the-Pooh (1926), and this was followed by The House at Pooh Corner (1928). Milne also included a poem about the bear in the children's verse book When We Were Very Young (1924) and many more in Now We Are Six (1927). All four volumes were illustrated by E. H. Shepard. Milne was the father of bookseller Christopher Robin Milne, upon whom the character Christopher Robin is based. It was during a visit to London Zoo, where Christopher became enamoured with the tame and amiable bear Winnipeg, that inspired Milne to write the story for his son. Winnie the Pooh has enchanted readers of all ages for nearly one hundred years with its relatable, heartwarming adventures that follow the famously friendly and lovable teddy bear. Winnie navigates the Hundred Acre Wood with Christopher Robin, Eeyore, Piglet, Owl, and Rabbit, learning the true meaning of friendship and the value of accepting everyone exactly as they are.

[Mama Traveler Recommended!] A Bear Called Paddington: First published in 1958, A Bear Called Paddington is the first novel by Michael Bond, chronicling the adventures of this lovable bear. Paddington has charmed readers for generations with his earnest good intentions and humorous misadventures. [Mama Traveler Recommended!] A Little Princess: One of the all-time favorite children's novels, Frances Hodgson Burnett's A Little Princess is a remarkable story. Sarah Crewe seemed to have everything, including a rich father who was willing to spend a lot of money on his little daughter. The story tells how she copes when disaster strikes - her father dies, having lost all his money. Sarah has a hard life and many set-backs as she learns to live with poverty and hard work. But the story has a happy ending, with the help of a little bit of magic.

[Mama Traveler Recommended!] Little Lord Fauntleroy: Written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, the author of A Little Princess and The Secret Garden, Little Lord Fauntleroy has enchanted generations of readers. Its conviction that nothing in the world is as strong as a kind heart has made the lovable lordling’s name synonymous with his gentle sincerity and tenderness. A seven-year-old boy is transported from the mean streets of nineteenth-century New York to the splendor of his grandfather's English manor in this beloved classic of children's literature. Young Cedric is astonished to find himself in possession of the title of Lord Fauntleroy and dismayed at his separation from his adored mother during the schooling for his new position. The Earl of Dorincourt, Cedric's crotchety grandfather, intends to instruct Cedric in the manners of the peerage; as it happens, the child teaches the man some valuable lessons about the true meaning of nobility.

Children's Books about English Tales and Legends

The Hero Beowulf: The epic warrior from the earliest English literature. Beowulf was always a hero. As a child, he borrowed his father's sword to attack a nest of savage trolls that preyed on travelers. Now a young man, he seeks to defend the Danish king Hrothgar from a monster named Grendel. King Hrothgar asks Beowulf, "Are you not afraid?" Beowulf replies, "Why should I fear? If I am fated to win, then Grendel cannot defeat me. If I am fated to lose, then it has been my destiny since the day I was born." Sure of his role, if not of his success, Beowulf prepares to battle Grendel . . .  This story of Beowulf is an introduction to the classic confrontation between good and evil.

The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood: The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood was written and illustrated by Howard Pyle and published in 1883. It is the best known version of the story of Robin Hood which had been popular throughout the previous century. Pyle popularized Robin Hood, his adventures, and his band of merry men in a way that influenced most later depictions in writing, drawing, and film. The book consists of a series of episodes pitting the outlaw Robin Hood, Little John, Friar Tuck and the rest of his band against corrupt authorities epitomized by the evil Sheriff of Nottingham.

The Story of Robin Hood: A beautifully illustrated picture book that brings the legend of the mysterious outlaw Robin Hood to life for little children. Robin makes a daring raid on the castle of the evil Sheriff of Nottingham in order to rescue the prisoners held inside. Specially rewritten for young children, the story features well-known characters including Maid Marian, Friar Tuck and, of course, Robin Hood himself! Mama Traveler Note: Check out more versions of Robin Hood retellings for kids.

The Story of King Arthur and His Knights: The classic version from 1903 by the American illustrator and writer Howard Pyle. The book consists of a large series of episodes in the legend of the mythological first king of Britain King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table. It was followed by The Story of the Champions of the Round Table, The Story of Sir Launcelot and His Companions, and The Story of the Grail, and the Passing of King Arthur.

King Arthur's Very Great Grandson: Henry Alfred Grummorson is the great-great-great-great-great-greatgreat grandson of Arthur, King of Britain. On his sixth birthday, adorned with a helmet and sword, Henry goes in search of adventure. He challenges a fire-breathing dragon to a fight, but the dragon prefers a game of blowing smoke rings. A cyclops wants only to have a staring contest. Even the griffin will not engage in "a battle to the uttermost" of the type Henry desires. Desperate for a real battle, strength against strength, might against might, Henry seeks out the fearsome leviathan. Has he met his match at last — or might he find something he didn’t know he was looking for? Children bold and imaginative will relate to Henry’s quest — and smile at its unintended consequences.

Merlin and the Dragons: When the young King Arthur visits Merlin, the old magician tells him a story about Merlin's childhood--a time of dragons, the cruel King Vortigern, and Uther Pendragon, the High King before Arthur.

The Kitchen Knight: A Tale of King Arthur: This story, based on The Tale of Sir Gareth of Orkney, is not for readers who prefer to avoid tales of damsels in distress who can't rescue themselves–although that makes a good talking point when reading critically with your children. Sir Gareth comes to Camelot, but no one knows him and he is sent to work in the kitchens. His fate is sealed, however, when he rescues a princess from the evil Red Knight. If you enjoy this title, Hodges has other Arthurian books to check out. Great illustrations! Check out more King Arthur-themed books here.

The Mousehole Cat: Based on the legend of Cornish fisherman Tom Bawcock and the stargazy pie, it tells the tale of a cat who goes with its owner on a fishing expedition in rough and stormy seas.
