Estonia - Children's Books

Tallinn is a stunning medieval city by the sea. A family trip in the Baltics (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) is highly recommended for those who like stories of knights, wizards, and dragons. It's one of those places that really feels like old Europe and isn't too crowded.

Children's Books about Estonia

Marta's Toes: This is the world through the eyes of Marta, a little girl growing up near a big city beside the sea (Mama Traveler Note: The big city could be Tallinn?). It is a world of bugs that talk and bath bubbles that whisper, airplanes that wave and monster vacuum cleaners. Most of all, it is a world of questions. Estonian best selling author Epp Petrone originally crafted this collection of personal stories as a gift for her daughter's birthday. Each tale springs from everyday life but is full of childlike whimsy. Complemented by beautiful illustrations by artist Piia Maiste, it has since become a popular favorite for bedtime reads for girls and boys alike.

Cloud After Cloud: "This story is about something that happened to me when I was six years old and staying in the [Estonian] countryside with my grandmother and grandfather. It was the last summer before I had to go to school and one day, while I was sitting in a tree, I witnessed a miracle ..." Cloud after Cloud is Estonian best selling author Epp Petrone's poetic homage to the wonders of nature. It is a tale for children and for those who are children at heart.

Tales of Estonian Fairies and Animals: 4 Books In 1Liza Moonlight is a nordic-born author whose main drive in writing fiction is to empower the youth with the key skills and knowledge to enjoy a passionate life, never forgetting what is most important - To Live Out our Personal mission with heaps of fun and a joyful sparkle in the eyes.

Cabbages & Kings--A Kid's Guide To Tallinn, Estonia: The first traces of human settlement found in Tallinn's city center by archeologists are about 5000 years old. The comb ceramic pottery found on the site dates to about 3000 BC and corded ware pottery c. 2500 BC. Then in 1154 a town called Qlwn (or Qalaven) was put on the world map of the Almoravid by the cartographer Muhammad al-Idrisi who described it as a small town like a large castle among the towns of Astlanda. John D. Weigand and Penelope Dyan went to the town of Tallinn, Estonia and would agree the cartographer's description is very accurate when it comes to this town because it is exactly like stepping into a castle province, and you can imagine it exactly as it once was, a place of cabbages and kings. This is a place for a child to fire up the imagination inside, to hear music, to eat candied almonds sold in little bags on the street, to watch archers with bows take aim at targets, and to walk among green paths, cobblestones and flowers.
